The strike continues! The government has not reached an agreement on teachers’ salaries

Education Minister Kristina Kallas confirmed in Delphi that no agreement had been reached.

The government, led by Prime Minister Kaja Kallas, this evening informed the Estonian Education Workers Union (EHL) of the failure to reach an agreement. His council will now decide whether and how to continue the strike.

Already in today’s government press conference it became clear that the ministers have not come very close to obtaining the 10 million euros.

Prime Minister Kaja Kallas said at noon that the Education Minister’s proposals to find additional funds will be discussed at today’s meeting. He reiterated that in previous discussions no minister agreed to hand over the money to his sector.

According to the prime minister, the question of why the money taken from the state budget does not reach teachers must be resolved. “It’s clear that there are places where the money ends up somewhere, so to speak,” Kallas said, noting that the state gives local governments money earmarked for education. “The money goes out, but we don’t know how much goes to the teachers.”

The government partners have implied that the Reform Party is not interested in the field of education and that their only contribution to ending the strike is to criticize the solutions. According to Kallas, however, the situation of teachers in local governments led by the Reform Party is often better than where squirrels are not in power.

The coalition partners Eesti 200 and the Social Democrats are increasingly aiming arrows of criticism at Kallas and the entire Squirrel Party. “When we meet, I don’t feel this tension,” Kallas said at the press conference. “But I don’t know what’s going on behind me,” he admitted.
