The Court of the European Union announced on Thursday that European football federation UEFA had breached competition rules by threatening clubs with sanctions as part of last year’s Super League project. Sports development company A22 released a new Super League competition system shortly afterwards.
“Our vision is based on extensive consultations with parties across Europe and is based on our basic principles, which is participation on a sports basis without permanent members,” announced A22, which led the project two years ago. “The participating clubs will also continue in their respective national leagues, which are the pillars of European football.”
Currently, international European football competitions are held under the auspices of UEFA, the decision of the Court of the European Union essentially gives clubs the right to decide in the long term whether to continue in the same way or participate in another series of competitions . A22’s proposed Super League would be run by the clubs themselves rather than a single organisation, and A22 also wants to bring matches to spectators for free.

A22 has also proposed a women’s super league, which would consist of two 16-team leagues.
