The Taliban send women to prison to protect them from gender-based violence

According to a United Nations report, before the Taliban took power in 2021, Afghanistan had 23 state-sponsored women’s protection centers that sheltered women who had suffered violence, but they no longer exist.

Officials from the Taliban-led administration told the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan that there was no need for such shelters, adding that they were Western concepts.

The report states that women are sent to prison if they have no male relatives to stay with or if male relatives are considered unsafe. The authorities also asked the male relatives to swear that they will not harm the relative.

Since the Taliban took power, women and girls have increasingly been chained to their homes. They are banned from pursuing an education above the sixth grade, visiting parks and holding most occupations. On trips over 72 kilometers they must bring a male companion and follow a dress code.

In July this year, the Taliban ordered the closure of all beauty salons, which were one of the few places women could go outside the home.

Human rights groups have warned that the Taliban government is enabling violence against women and girls and reducing their legal protections.
