The treacherous sod scared Metsa and St. Paul, but they await the cup quarter-finals – Soccernet.ee

Karol Mets and St. Pauli survived a small scare in the German Cup series, but finally gained the lead against Homburg in the Regionalliga with the score 4:1 and reached the quarterfinals.

The club representing the city of Homburg, which is located 500 kilometers as the crow flies from Hamburg, i.e. on the other side of Germany, is playing for the sixth year in the south-west zone of the Regionalliga, where it achieved fourth place last season, but this year they are leading the table after 20 rounds, i.e. in the running for the third championship. That’s how S. Paul took a few dozen minutes to break the home team, until central defender Hauke Wahl opened the scoring in the 24th minute.

Just four minutes later, however, the score was suddenly level. Mets responded with a free kick to Sascha Burchert, who was in goal, from the corner of the penalty area, but the experienced goalkeeper, who has not yet entered the field in league matches this season, did not could take into account the hilly grass terrain of the Waldstadion. The ball bounced high off the ground and also off Burchert’s leg, Homburg captain Markus Mendler was first on the line and pushed the ball into the net from a meter away.

After the break, S. Paul’s coach Fabian Hürzeler made two changes, and Tunisian Elias Saad, who arrived on the field, played an important role in restoring success. The guests decided the fate of the duel within ten minutes: first Saad scored the 2:1 in the 64th minute, then Marcel Hartel scored the 3:1 from Saad’s pass in the 69th minute and Johannes Eggestein scored the 4:1 on a pass from Hartel in the 73rd minute.

The Mets played 90 minutes as usual and now the quarter-finals await him and his teammates. The opponent will be drawn on December 10, before the round of 16 tie is played on Wednesday evening.

In the other matches played on Tuesday they secured a place in the top eight Kaiserslautern AND Düsseldorf Fortuna, who in the duels between the teams of the first league defeated Nuremberg 2:0 and Magdeburg 2:1 respectively. Top flight club Mönchengladbachi Borussia and Wolfsburg’s fight went into extra time after regular time goalless, and penalty shootouts seemed to be a reality, but in the 120th minute Kouadio Kone was the first to head in front of an empty net to stop the counterattack and meant a 1-0 victory for Gladbach much to the delight of the home crowd.
