The Ukrainian community has started collecting candy wrappers for a noble cause

According to Valentina Tiora, responsible for the initiative, the idea was born from the awareness that at Christmas we eat a lot of sweets, which means a lot of candy wrappers.

Since candy wrappers belong to non-recyclable packaging, they can be used in other ways, for example to fill upholstered furniture.

Motivated by this, the Ukrainian community began collecting such parcels to fill chair bags, which in turn will find their place in the Central Estonia Counseling and Rehabilitation Center in the Lai 33 building.

The chairs are sewn from fabric scraps by Paide’s RSKS Design sewing workshop, which develops sustainable production.

A bean bag chair requires 350-400 liters of filling material.

According to Tiora, not only candy wrappers are collected, but also all similar packaging, such as dry goods packets and empty crisp packets, as well as cracker and curd wrappers.

“Such packaging breaks and tears easily, but does not stretch. Sometimes such packaging is silvered inside,” he said, adding that it is difficult to avoid buying products with such packaging in Paide and Estonia.

At the time of collection it is important that the wrappers and packaging are clean or washed. Often the type of plastic PP 5 or PP 7 is indicated on them.

If you no longer need to cut candy wrappers into smaller pieces, you need to cut larger packages. “Larger wrappers should be cut into smaller pieces, but no smaller than 3×3 centimeters,” explains Tiora. “Gather the material in a bag and in January we will let you know where to take it,” she added.

The aim of the project is to draw attention to packaging waste as a serious environmental problem and the possibilities for reducing it.
