The US Congress has reached an agreement on state funding

The January 19 deadline for the end of government funding and a government “shutdown” is likely to be avoided. However, the deal does not include the White House’s proposed financing package for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, which is being discussed separately. Ladvik’s decision will also have to be approved by ordinary members of Congress.

Under the agreement, a total of $1.59 trillion will be funded for fiscal year 2024, of which $886 billion will go to defense spending and $704 billion to other spending. Last year, US President Joe Biden and then-Speaker of the House of Representatives Kevin McCarthy reached an agreement on the same amount. Budget negotiations were delayed by the overthrow of McCarthy in October and the election process of new President Mike Johnson.
