The Estonian youth handball team, born in 2006, concluded the European Championship qualifying tournament on Sunday by losing against the Czech Republic 30:48.
After Saturday’s victory over Turkey, the youth teams still had a chance to reach the A final, to ensure this the Estonians would have had to defeat the Czech Republic and hope for a suitable result in the second match.
However, Estonia was immediately overwhelmed by an avalanche at the beginning of the match, in the seventh minute only Kristofer Liedemann had scored for the Estonian team, and the Czech Republic had already scored eight goals by that point. At half time the Estonians managed to find the scoring rhythm, but the Czechs always had a quick response, the end of the half did not change the game and the Czechs were ahead 26:15.
The second half started where the first ended. In the 45th minute, the hosts made a free throw for the score 37:23, and the final score was 48:30. Dominik Skopar was the Czechs’ top scorer with 11 goals. On the Estonian side, Kristofer-Robin Soomets scored five goals and Jasper Arnover and Kristofer Liedemann four goals.

Estonia finished the subgroup with two defeats and one victory, but at the final whistle they still had the hope of reaching the A final, but in the evening Ukraine drew with Turkey and thus went ahead of Estonia.
“There was still some hope, but even though the opponents made some changes, the men who came off the bench played as well as the previous ones. Unfortunately today we couldn’t put in a good enough performance,” concluded Kalk.
