These are the most common venereal diseases in Estonia

Mycoplasmosis can cause an ectopic pregnancy

Mycoplasmosis is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases in Estonia. This is a chlamydia-like genital tract infection caused by Genital mycoplasma bacteria. Mycoplasmosis spreads among both men and women during unprotected intercourse and oral sex.

Even in the case of mycoplasmosis, the infected person may not show any symptoms. However, it can cause increased flow, postcoital bleeding, and lower abdominal pain in women. Men may experience mucus discharge or painful urination. In untreated cases, it can cause pelvic inflammatory disease and ectopic pregnancy and is a cause of infertility in both women and men.

The spread of gonorrhea, or tripper, is increasing across Europe

Late last year, several reports from the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) revealed that the spread of chlamydia and gonorrhea has increased across Europe. Even in Estonia, according to the SYNLAB laboratory specialist, the spread of gonorrhea, or tripper in the vernacular, has seen a growing trend in recent years. “Compared to 2022, gonorrhea has reached the top three venereal diseases, and although there are no mass cases, this trend is somewhat worrying,” Lahesaare said.

Gonorrhea is prevalent primarily among younger and middle-aged sexually active people. As a general trend, almost half of the cases involve men who have sexual relations with other men. “Unfortunately, gonorrhea can occur without symptoms in 50 percent of women and 10 to 20 percent of men, making its detection more difficult and its spread more widespread,” Lahesaare said.

The latency period of the disease usually lasts from 2 to 7 days, but can also last up to 15 days. In men, gonorrhea begins with a tingling sensation in the urethra, a grayish discharge is added, which in a few days turns into yellowish pus, urination becomes painful, and inflammation of the prostate develops. In women, gonorrhea begins with painful urination and white discharge. There is pus at the entrance to the vagina and in the vagina.
