Tsahkna: Finance Minister Võrklaev tries to give the impression that the strike is only a problem of the Education Minister

“Estonia is going through an educational crisis, the reason for which are reforms that have not been implemented for years and empty promises from all political parties that the salary of teachers should be 120% of the average salary in Estonia. However , it is clear that today in Toompea education workers cannot rely only on a living wage. The problems in our education system are wider and can be solved if the government meets with teachers and local authorities to discuss the agreement on education. This can be done better under conditions of industrial peace, if unfortunately there is no consensus in the coalition to find the necessary 10 million euros,” Tsahkna began in the post.

Tsahkna added that the Education Minister did everything possible to prevent the strike. “Just before the approval of the state budget for 2024, he found another 8 million euros in the ministry’s budget. However, the Minister of Finance tries to give the impression that the strike is a problem only of the Minister of Education. This is not the case, it is a problem of the whole society and the whole government, which must be addressed together,” he said.

Tsahkna noted that the strike and education crisis must be resolved by all political parties. “All political parties have made promises, now they must be kept,” she said.

“The idea of the Minister of Finance that the Minister of Education must cut costs by 200 million from the Ministry’s budget is not adequate: this money should go to the detriment of science and education, which is also agreed upon by political parties, ” he said and added that education must be constantly invested. “Otherwise, we will end up using the same talking points over and over again after presenting the state budget for the new year.”
