She has felt a lot of support in the last few weeks, across party lines, said Bircher in an interview with the regional broadcaster TeleM1. As a city councilor for Aarburg, the 39-year-old business economist brings executive experience with her.

Two women have so far registered to run for the SVP in the Aargau government council elections next October. National Councilor Martina Bircher and parliamentary group leader Désirée Stutz are applying within the party to succeed the retiring government councilor Alex Hürzeler.
The SVP’s nomination will take place at the party conference on May 8th. Cantonal President Thomas Burgherr said that no other candidacies had been reported yet. The deadline for registration is Thursday evening, it was said.
After almost 25 years in politics, she would like to help shape the canton as a government councilor, said Stutz. The 43-year-old lawyer from Möhlin is SVP parliamentary group president in the Grand Council.

Nomination im Mai

Government Councilor Hürzeler announced in mid-January that he would be stepping down as a government councilor at the end of the year after four terms in office. The SVP Aargau then announced that it wanted to hold the second seat on the government council alongside health director Jean-Pierre Gallati, who was running again.
The other three current government councilors also want to take part in the general elections. GLP National Councilor Beat Flach expressed interest in a seat. The Greens are also considering a candidacy, as they announced in January. The Greens lost their seat to the SVP in 2016 after government councilor Susanne Hochuli resigned.
