Ukraine has passed major bills to start EU accession negotiations

A project on the rights of national minorities was approved, a request from Hungary, which was openly against Ukraine’s accession. According to Zelensky, the law on minority rights took into account the recommendations of the Council of Europe’s Venice Commission, which advises on legal and institutional standards.

The rest of the bills concern increasing the number of employees of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau, further powers of the National Anti-Corruption Agency in inspecting assets and provisions for public declaration of assets. Furthermore, the Ukrainian government approved the bill on lobbying.

Next week’s EU summit will consider the start of accession negotiations between Ukraine and neighboring country Moldova.

“We expect that the leaders of the European Union will appreciate Ukraine’s adequate efforts and that the corresponding European promises to Ukraine will be fulfilled,” Zelenskyi said. According to him, Ukraine has “done everything expected of us” by complying with EU recommendations.
