Urmas Paet, returning from a visit to Israel, said terrorists who invaded Israeli villages on October 7 tortured and killed peaceful Israelis en masse. “I went to some of those villages where terrorists kidnapped over 200 people and took them to Gaza. People aged between 9 months and 85 years. The release of these people must be a priority,” he said.
“We in Estonia know very well what the abduction of our people by terrorists and criminals means for the relatives of these people and for the whole society.”
Paet added that it is unfair to equate kidnapped civilians with convicted criminals, whom Israel is forced to release in exchange for the release of its citizens. “This will encourage Palestinian Hamas to continue abducting civilians.”
According to Urmas Paet, meaningful peace talks between Israel and Palestinian Hamas are possible if Palestinian Hamas and other similar organizations accept the right to exist of Israel and its people. “For the moment this is not the case, as was clearly demonstrated by the mass terrorist attack on October 7 and the rocket attacks on Israel from Gaza,” Paet said.
