US poll: Most Russians support Putin and war against Ukraine | foreign country

According to a survey conducted by US sociologists last November, support for Putin and the war against Ukraine remains high among the Russian population.

The National Public Opinion Research Center (NORC) at the University of Chicago conducted a survey of Russian residents in November 2023.

The NORC survey revealed that as many as 66% of respondents intend to vote for Vladimir Putin, who has held this position for decades, in the Russian presidential election. Support for Putin is above average among women and those over 30. As many as 73% of people over the age of 60 support Putin’s re-election, the corresponding figure among those under 30 is 53%.

Furthermore, 67% of respondents support Putin’s foreign policy and 58% support his actions in domestic politics.

Polls suggest that sanctions against Russia have not affected many Russians. Therefore, 76% of respondents said they do not believe foreign travel restrictions will affect them. Additionally, only 32% of respondents said their economic well-being has worsened compared to two years ago. According to 19% of those interviewed, their well-being has improved, while for 48% nothing has changed.

The Russian people support the war against Ukraine. As many as 63% of respondents support a war against Ukraine (the poll used the term “special military operation” favored by Russian authorities), while 45% strongly support it. Only 13% of respondents are against the war.

94% are proud to be Russian and only 5% are not. 68% are concerned about the spread of Western values, such as LGBTQ, in Russia, and 62% think that Russia is not treated equally in the world.

64% consider the war in Ukraine a clash of civilizations against the West and Russia, while only 20% of respondents consider it a conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

The main source of information for residents of Russia is television, used every day by 57% of respondents. In second place are social media, used every day by 51% of those interviewed. Only 20% of respondents use a virtual private network (VPN), which grants access to websites banned by authorities.

Although 74% of respondents say that it is important to have an opposition in the country, only 42% believe that political changes are needed in Russia now, while 46% say they are not needed now.

A total of 1,046 adults living in Russia and occupied Crimea were interviewed in the survey, so the maximum margin of error for the survey is 3.4%.

The survey was conducted by interviewers who speak Russian as their native language on the phone. The survey tables can be found on the NORC website.
