Väino Koorberg will be CEO of Media Union | Estonia

At the end of January Väino Koorberg, long-time editor-in-chief of Õhtulehet and currently training journalists and journalism students, will take over as CEO of the Estonian Union of Media Businesses.

According to Toomas Tiiveli, President of the Council of the Media Union, the new leader of the Media Union will be a great expert in the field, under whose leadership the work will continue in the name of maintaining freedom of the press, ensuring fair conditions of competition for the sector and media awareness of the Estonian people.

“I also want to thank Merle Viirmaad, who has successfully led the media union under rather turbulent circumstances over the last four years,” Tiivel added.

“The Media Association has never only been a promoter of the common interests of member companies, but has also played a very important role in defining the general quality standard of Estonian journalism and in protecting, maintaining and promoting the common values ​​of journalists – reliability, professionalism, independence and a sense of social responsibility. In the information space full of noise, this role has gradually become more important,” Koorberg said.

Koorberg currently hosts the weekly program “The Situation of Journalism” on Kuku Radio and is a guest lecturer at the Institute of Social Sciences at the University of Tartu.

Merle Viirmaa-Treifeldt, former CEO of Media Union, continues to work as a corporate consultant and for EBS educate’you as a teacher.

The Association of Estonian Media Companies is an organization acting in the common interest of media channels, whose members include newspapers, magazines, portals, television and radio channels.
