Valieva, awaiting the decision of the CAS, was limited to bronze in the Russian championship | figure skating

Seventeen-year-old figure skater Kamila Valieva, who is waiting for an answer on her doping case from the International Arbitration of Sport (CAS), failed to win more than bronze at the Russian championships.

Valieva became champion of Russia only once, at the end of December 2021 at the age of 15. However, it was in that competition that she gave a positive doping test result, which is why the result was canceled at that time.

Valiyeva’s test results were only made public last February, the day after Valiyeva helped the Russian Olympic Committee to first place in the team competition at the Beijing Olympics.

The doping test of Valieva, who was only 15 years old at the time, showed traces of the banned heart drug trimetazidine. The now 17-year-old Olympic figure skater thought the banned substance had entered her body because she drank from the same glass of water as her grandfather, who uses the heart drug.

The Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) admitted the anti-doping rule violation in January this year, but according to the organization’s interpretation, the athlete was not guilty or negligent. Then both the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the International Skating Union (ISU) announced that they did not agree with the Russians’ decision and appealed to the sports court. In an unexpected move, RUSADA itself then turned to the CAS, requesting that the sports court decide on the skater’s punishment.

The sports court heard Valieva’s case in September and November and promised that the final decision will be made by the end of January at the latest. Only after the decision of the CAS will the final order of the competition of the Beijing Olympic team be determined and the athletes will receive the long-awaited medals.

Due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Russian skaters have been unable to participate in international competitions since spring last year and only compete in national feats of strength. There Valieva reached the podium, but she did not dominate as she did before the doping scandal broke out. In the Russian championship of this period, Valieva took the lead in the short program, but fell four times on the toe loop at the beginning of the free program and ended up in third place in the free program and also finished with 237.99 points in bronze. Another star of Valieva’s controversial coach, Eteri Tutberidze, became the Russian champion, 16-year-old Adelija Petrosyan, who was second in the short program and best in the free program, collecting a total of 246.53 points. Sofia Muravjova won silver with 239.40 points.

Yevgeni Semenenko became the champion of Russia for the second year in a row among men, Anastasia Mishina and Aleksandr Galliamov in pairs and Aleksandra Stepanova and Ivan Bukin in ice dancing.

In the Japanese championships, success in the men’s and women’s singles accompanied the reigning world champions. Among the men, the title was defended by two-time world champion Shoma Uno, who won his sixth Japanese championship. Uno scored 298.04 points, followed by Yuma Kaguyama with 292.10 points and Sota Yamamoto in third place with 287 points.

Among the women, two-time world champion Kaori Sakamoto also defended her title, becoming Japanese champion for the fourth time. Sakamoto was the best in both routines and scored a total of 233.12 points. Mone Chiba won silver with 209.27 points and Mao Shimada won bronze with 202.18 points.
