VIDEO | Don’t take out a loan? Kaja Kallas: We should still find 400 million in cuts

According to Kallas, the board of directors discussed what the 400 million hole in the state budget will be. “The council’s position is that we should still find places to save money and not make additional expenditures to fill this hole, because we really don’t want any further tax increases,” Kallas said.

Asked whether the idea of taking a loan had been abandoned, Kallas repeated that the Reform Party believed cuts should be found. Additionally, they discussed how to proceed with the state budget. According to Kallas, Finance Minister Mart Võrklaev presented the options and discussions will soon be held with coalition partners to find compromises.

Although several members of the reformist party said that it was not possible to continue on the path taken and that the party should change gear, this was not discussed during the meeting, according to Kallas. Regarding the Reform Party’s lowest rating in five years, Kallas said support will increase when people see the results of difficult decisions.

“It’s true, it’s difficult right now, because we are the ones who take on the responsibility of government and make difficult decisions, but at the moment there are no elections,” Kallas said.

As for the former members of the Center Party who have joined the Socialists, Kallas said that the coalition is stronger thanks to this step. “However this does not directly affect our position,” Kallas assessed the impact of the decision on the Reform Party. He confirmed that the squirrels have no intention of dragging out the 200 Estonian governments.
