VIDEO | The arcade of the legendary French basketball team burned to the ground on Christmas Eve

The 3,000-seat Sports Arena in Gravelines-Dunkirk has hosted the team for the past 40 years. However, on Christmas Eve, an electrical short occurred in the swimming pool of the sports complex, which led to the fire. Although more than 90 firefighters tried to put out the fire, the mostly wooden building was destroyed by the flames.

Fortunately, no one was killed, but two firefighters were slightly injured. “Incredible. This is a disaster whose effects are impossible to measure,” said team leader Hervé Beddeleem, assisted by Grevelines mayor Bertrand Ringot. “We will probably have to build the arena from scratch.”

Gravelines’ team reached the second round of this year’s FIBA Europe Cup, where they are leaders in Group M. However, their season did not go well. Although only ASVEL and Cholet have remained in the French league longer than Gravenlines, this year the team finds itself in penultimate place in the league, i.e. in the relegation zone. Now the team must urgently find a new hall to play in until the end of the season.
