VIDEO | The future of politics? The prime minister, who has been dead for 9 years, appears in the Belgian election advert with the help of an artificial branch

“You are right, the beast is back”, says Dehaene in the campaign video. “Our country faces serious challenges in 2024, but in my time it was the same.”

The CD&V website states that the Dehaene family gave consent for the video to be made. Dehaene’s son told Het Laatste Nieuws newspaper that he immediately realized that it wasn’t really him who fathered him.

On social media platform X, people are still debating whether making such a video is ethical. Political scientist Carl Devos hopes this does not become the norm in the next election campaign. Some are hoping for layoffs in the party’s marketing department.

The party responded that it had acted with “great respect”.

On June 9, 2024, Belgians will go to the polls to elect a new parliament.

Jean-Luc Dehaene was Prime Minister of Belgium from 1992 to 1999. During his time the euro was introduced. Furthermore, he was a member of the European Parliament until his death. He also held other ministerial positions. Dehaene died in 2014 at the age of 73.
