Weather in Europe: Scandinavia was hit by bitter cold, Western Europe was hit by heavy flooding

On Wednesday, the temperature in the Nordic countries fell below -40 degrees for the second day in a row. In Kvikkjokk-Årrenjarka in Swedish Lapland, the temperature dropped to -43.6 degrees, the lowest January temperature in the country for 25 years, Swedish news agency TT reported.

Extremely cold temperatures, snow and stormy winds have shocked the Nordic countries in many ways. Several bridges were closed and some rail and ferry services were also suspended due to poor traffic conditions. Danish police have urged motorists to avoid unnecessary journeys. Furthermore, in Scandinavia several schools were closed due to the cold.

However, Western Europe was rocked by strong winds and rain, which caused chaos in some places. The storm caused power outages, transportation problems, property damage and disruption.

More than 300 flood warnings were issued across England and Wales on Wednesday, with more than 10,000 households without electricity. Floods and blackouts also hit the country’s rail network on Tuesday, with many operators reporting continuing problems on Wednesday morning.

In northern France, the floods were so severe that rescue teams had to help residents of the town of Arques evacuate their homes.

Shipping company DFDS said a ferry traveling from Norway to Denmark with around 900 passengers on board was unable to dock in Copenhagen due to the storm. The ship waited for the storm to calm down.

The strongest storms were recorded on the Isle of Wight off the southern coast of England, where wind speeds reached almost 42 meters per second.

The storm also caused casualties. In fact, a motorist died when a tree fell on his car in the west of England, while in the Netherlands a 75-year-old cyclist died, who probably fell from his bicycle due to strong winds.
