what disease is endometriosis? Symptoms, how to recognize it

Endometriosis is a disease that affects many Estonian women. Its cause and spread are not fully known. Endometriosis occurs mostly in women of childbearing age who menstruate. In rare cases, symptoms also affect patients after the onset of menopause (end of menstruation).

Symptoms of endometriosis can appear as early as adolescence, when the menstrual cycle becomes regular. Typical endometriotic pain begins a day or two before the start of your period. Endometriosis can also cause pain during sexual intercourse, urination and defecation.

A common problem is infertility due to adhesions caused by endometriosis (the fallopian tubes are twisted and not passable), hormonal changes, changes in the composition of the fluid in the abdominal cavity and more. Endometriosis is found in many women who are investigated for infertility, but not all women diagnosed with endometriosis are infertile.

In 20-25% of women with endometriosis, the disease proceeds completely without complaints.

How to treat endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a chronic disease that cannot be cured. The goal of treatment is to reduce pain and other symptoms as much as possible, increase the chances of pregnancy, and improve the woman’s quality of life.

They relieve pain that worsens during menstruation and reduce the inflammatory reaction. Painkillers are primarily intended for short-term use to address more severe pain episodes.

Hormonal means

They target hormone-sensitive endometriosis foci, reducing them to a certain extent and preventing the spread of the disease; make periods less painful; reduce the amount of menstrual bleeding and help control the disease. It can be used for a long time.

If a woman does not want to get pregnant right away, hormonal contraceptives (combined hormonal contraceptives, minipill, hormonal intrauterine device, implant) are usually suitable for treatment.

Sometimes other hormonal preparations are also used for treatment. If necessary, your doctor will explain this to you.

It is mostly laparoscopic and allows the release of adhesions between different organs caused by endometriosis and the removal of endometriotic foci and the endometrioid cyst capsule. Open surgery is rarely necessary.
