When the emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Nawaf, died, the crown prince was appointed new emir | foreign country

The Emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, died on Saturday at the age of 87, the palace announced.

“We mourn with deep sadness the Emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Sabah,” Kuwait state television said from the palace.

State television reported that Kuwaiti Crown Prince Sheikh Meshal al-Ahmad al-Jaber Al-Sabah was named the oil-rich country’s new emir.

“The Government of Kuwait has appointed the Crown Prince, His Highness Sheikh Meshaal, as Emir of the State of Kuwait,” state media reported.

In November this year, Kuwait’s state news agency KUNA reported that the emir had been admitted to hospital due to an “emergency health problem”. It was later reported that the ruler’s health is “stable”.

Sheikh Nawaf became crown prince of Kuwait in 2006 and came to power in September 2020 following the death of his half-brother Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmed al-Sabah.

Born in 1937, Sheikh Nawaf was the fifth son of Sheikh Ahmad al-Jaber Al-Sabah, who ruled Kuwait from 1921 to 1950. He began his political career at the age of 25 as governor of Hawalli province and was Interior Minister of Kuwait since 1978.
