Will the semi-final of the Estonian song be compensated by the price of a cheaper election call? ERR explains why the singing competition’s voting policy was changed

The first hints that one might expect a change in the price of voting for the Estonian song this time emerged as early as July, when the national broadcaster announced the next changes to the Estonian song competition. On that occasion it was underlined that we are looking for freshness for the singing competition and that many organizational things are expected to change. Then the Chronicle asked Killand whether the changes will mean that the price of a call to vote will change and that in future viewers will be able to express their opinion more cheaply. “We will also review all these prices. Even in the case of a fresh start, we review everything for a while. At the moment, we cannot comment definitively on what it will be, but we will certainly look at and think about the topic,” Killandi said at the time .

Now it turned out that the price of the voting call was changed. If last year, when voting for Eesti Laulu, a call cost 1.70 euros, and the year before it was 1.60 euros, now the viewer can save. This time a voting call will cost 1.40 euros. Compared to last year, this means a discount of almost 20% for viewers. “We examine every year, as well as this year, the votes related to the start of a new competition. This year we want everyone who wishes to be able to vote at a lower price in a difficult economic situation. Since this time we it will be a semi-final, the popular vote will have more weight than in previous years,” Karmel Killandi, editor-in-chief of experiential programs at the ERR, explained to Kroonika.
