Winners of the “My Christmas Poem” poetry competition by Apollo and RaRa

The National Library of Estonia and Apollo Books’ last family breakfast of the year took place on December 16 at the Solaris Center, RaRa Solaris Embassy and Apollo Bookstore, attended by more than 100 breakfast attendees in family. The event was particularly special, because in addition to the repair of broken poems, Christmas carols, help in verse and creation of Christmas cards, the best verse masters of the “My Christmas Verse” competition were awarded on the spot.

557 children between the ages of 3 and 12 submitted their poems to the competition. Among them, the honorable jury, consisting of Karl Martin Sinijärv, Margit Tammur and Annika Pilt, chose the most outstanding of the three age groups (preschoolers, 7-9 years and 10-12 years). A special prize was also awarded. The words from the poem that resonated the most were: Christmas, Santa Claus, Christmas tree, elf, children, gift, candy, gingerbread, snow, winter and reindeer.

The president of the jury, Karl Martin Sinijärv of the National Library, recognizes the masters of poetry: “A crazy amount of elves, gingerbread and very little baby Jesus. There really wasn’t another. In the world of Muslims, Muscovites and of the other Comanches, a quiet Christian tradition is fading. However, children still write poetry and not just obtusely behind the rhythm of rhyme. There are some really interesting things. We still have hope!”

Annika Pilt, member of the Apollo jury, adds: “It was a pleasure to note that so many young and old poetry lovers participated in the competition. The poems make the soul resonate and the eyes shine. Particularly touching were the issues related to school bullying and war. Furthermore, being with family and friends is not always available or essential for everyone. The world’s pain points also reach the minds of children.”

The most outstanding verse champion from each age group of the Christmas Carol Competition travels with his family to the winter wonderland of the Estonian Open-Air Museum to gather new poetic inspiration. Furthermore, the dwarves of Apollo and the Estonian National Library filled the poetry masters’ gift bags with really cute and sweet surprises.

The last festive family morning of the season was hosted by the actress Maria Valk, who recited the most important poems from the “My Christmas Verses” competition and performed Christmas-themed musical pieces. The first of the new year

I like snow-covered fir trees.
The snowflakes are blowing.
The houses are covered in snow.
In the month of Christmas the stars shine, the birds chirp pleasantly.
Crows and magpies are here in my land
walking, looking for Christmas dinner.
Goats and moose jump in the snow.
Large tracks left in the snow.

Christmas

Christmas is upon us,
kus mu undruk udupeen?
How the hell did it go?
There was no argument, you pieces of dog?
Kae me taren kuusk om illus,
the elf also peeked from somewhere.
Sit at the table, dear brothers,
the father’s bells ring from afar.
I’ll say Christmas
end of time in sa rahuaega

Christmas wish

Summer passed and autumn came,
now it must be good.
Because it’s almost Christmas,
then you can receive gifts.
I don’t want candy, cookie.
That’s right, no one is alone.
And that the war would be over soon
and we would all be friends.

Little elf

A dwarf is taller than a tall elf
and very festive and happy.
Dance and jump
and pushes others onto the dance floor.
Swing hard
until his socks wear out
then cleans the socks
and hangs on the tree.
Firecrackers decorate Christmas
and holes for the elves’ socks.
