Workers let go from the start-up sector may look to more mature companies

The wave of layoffs in the tech sector began last year and continues today. Therefore, the world’s largest companies such as Microsoft, Meta, Twitter and Amazon have reduced their workforce by tens of thousands. The wave of layoffs has also reached Estonia. The reason is mainly the cooling of the economy, inflation and partly also a certain post-boom market correction, because during the availability of cheap capital there was a fierce struggle for the workers.

For employees who have made their careers in the start-up industry, browsing LinkedIn job ads or job postings can leave an unclear picture of the current situation. If previously the offers for builders and other specialists came from doors and windows, now silence reigns in this regard. There are no large waves of hiring, companies in the ICT sector are cautious and waiting for the economic situation to recover. “This does not mean that you should lower your head. Instead of start-ups and, more generally, the technology sector, it is worth looking at more traditional and historically stable sectors, where there are also very intense and challenging opportunities,” he said Karo.
