This may sound strange for a devout Muslim to say, but Kholoud Khardoum, a 53-year-old man living in Iraq, certainly said this.
“Not everything about Ramadan is about religion,” said a writer who lives in Baghdad. “Ramadan is also about the atmosphere and tradition of gathering people together.”
Kholoud told DW that Iraq is a Muslim-majority country, but in areas where different religious communities live together, one will often find non-Muslims taking part in celebrations around the Ramadan holiday.
Especially “iftar”, namely breaking the fast which occurs at sunset, which is often used as a time for friends and family to gather to break the fast.
“Sometimes Christians make desserts and send them to their Muslim neighbors,” Khardoum said. “Sometimes Muslims send food. Or they all fast together. It’s really nice to share things like this,” he said.
There are many similar stories elsewhere in the Middle East. “One of my oldest and closest friends is Muslim, so we share some customs,” said Egyptian woman Um Amir.
“For example, I will fast during the day in the month of Ramadan, then break the fast with my family,” said the 50-year-old woman, who lives in Assiut, a city south of Cairo.
“I’m Christian, but since I was little I had a lot of Muslim friends, and I never questioned religious differences,” said Rita, 34, a Lebanese woman who was also fasting in Beirut.
