Underworld Profits: The Rise of Southeast Asia’s Human Trafficking Crisis

Human Trafficking-Fueled Fraud on the Rise in Southeast Asia

By: CNN

Organized crime rings in Southeast Asia are generating nearly $3 trillion in illicit ‌revenue annually through human trafficking-fueled fraud, according to Interpol. This revelation sheds ‍light on the massive profits earned by these criminal cartels.

‍ Interpol secretary-general Jurgen Stock disclosed that one international organized crime group alone makes $50 billion a year, contributing to the estimated $2 trillion to $3 trillion of illicit money flowing through the global financial system annually. To put this into perspective, France’s⁣ economy is valued at $3.1 trillion by⁢ the International Monetary Fund.

While ⁤drug trafficking remains a significant source of ‌income for organized crime, criminal groups are utilizing smuggling networks to traffic humans, arms, and stolen goods, ‍among other illicit activities, as stated by Stock.

Stock ⁣emphasized that the rise of⁤ online anonymity, new business models, and the impact of Covid have enabled ⁤organized crime groups to operate on a scale previously ⁤unimaginable. This shift has transformed what⁤ was once a regional crime threat in Southeast Asia into a global human trafficking crisis, affecting millions of victims worldwide.

According to Interpol, their operations in ⁣Asia have ⁢resulted in nearly 3,500 arrests and the seizure of $300 million in illegally obtained assets across 34‍ countries since 2021.

The Shift to Online Fraud

Over ‍the past three years, survivor⁢ testimonies, NGO campaigns, and media‌ reports have exposed a surge in online fraud gangs operating in Southeast ⁤Asia. Many of these groups exploit de facto slave labor to⁣ target individuals‍ globally, including those in the United ‌States.

On Putin’s weak point! Joe Biden’s calls not to attack Russian refineries are complete nonsense ᐉ News from Fakti.bg – World

The White House’s call to stop attacks on refineries on the territory of the Russian Federation due to a possible increase in oil prices is an absurd and doomed political decision of the administration of US President Joe Biden, commented in the editorial team of the American newspaper La Collina.

“During World War II, the Allies began bombing Nazi Germany’s oil refineries in 1942 and continued to do so with equal force until the end of the war in May 1945. This was the key to winning the war because it deprived the Germans to load tanks, bombers, armored vehicles and supply trucks. To win the war, Ukraine must also reduce the Kremlin’s ability to supply ammunition and weapons to front-line troops in Donbass and the Crimean peninsula”, underlines l ‘editorial.

And the Biden administration’s position of “putting the price of gasoline above the lives and sovereignty of Ukrainians” was called “terrible” by the authors of the material. “Biden’s success in the November elections cannot be considered more important than saving the lives of Ukrainians.”

The newspaper also pointed out that the White House did not condemn recent Russian cruise missile and drone attacks on civilian sites and Ukrainian energy infrastructure. And Biden still continues to hold the crucial weapons and ammunition that Ukraine needs to fight and win the war.

“Zelensky is fighting back with what he has: drones. And he’s hitting Russia where it hurts, in the wallet. He’s attacking the Kremlin’s global means of financing Putin’s war,” The Hil
