South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol: The Downfall of a Controversial Leader

Facing Challenges: President Yoon Suk Yeol’s Troubles

In February, as the price of a single apple in Korea hit an astonishing $7 (£5.5) at a fancy department store, it became evident that voters were grappling with skyrocketing grocery prices. The exorbitant cost of fruit reached a breaking point for many. President Yoon Suk Yeol’s attempt to address this concern backfired when he visited a food market and praised the “reasonably priced” spring onions there—unaware that the market was heavily subsidized. This incident sparked online outrage and mockery, with one opposition leader quipping, “The president is going to be brought down by a spring onion.”

However, food affordability is just one among several reasons behind President Yoon’s conservative party’s failure in South Korea’s parliamentary elections—the crucial test of his first two years in office. Unpopular since his election by the narrowest margin ever recorded in South Korean history (0.7%), President Yoon has consistently maintained an approval rating ranging between 30% and 40%. Last month, nearly half of those surveyed perceived his performance as “very bad.”

“There are many incidents that have chipped away at his standing… First is a series of diplomatic gaffes… These incidents embarrassed Koreans who felt Mr Yoon had tarnished their reputation overseas.”

According to Dr. Lee Sangsin—a political scientist and polling expert—various factors have corroded President Yoon’s standing over time. One such factor involves diplomatic blunders that garnered international attention; for example, Mr. Yoon was caught swearing on an open microphone shortly after meeting US President Joe Biden.

Adding fuel to the fire is First Lady Kim Keon Hee, who has proven even more unpopular than the preside

Under the leadership of Kyriakos Mitsotakis, we are heading towards the European elections with faith, unity and optimism and above all with a sense of responsibility for the critical moments and the stakes of the electoral contest”.

As he typically said: “In the June elections, we are not only voting for Europe, but we are voting for Greece in Europe. We are voting so that the course of our country towards the future continues undisturbed”.

As Mr. Plakiotakis said after expressing his thanks as chairman of the Organizing Committee, “self-criticism and the recognition of failures is a useful tool for the one who has the responsibility of governance. In a huge, complex project, trying to eliminate decades of pathogens in a few years, there will be difficult moments. But difficulties small
