In February, as the price of a single apple in Korea hit an astonishing $7 (£5.5) at a fancy department store, it became evident that voters were grappling with skyrocketing grocery prices. The exorbitant cost of fruit reached a breaking point for many. President Yoon Suk Yeol’s attempt to address this concern backfired when he visited a food market and praised the “reasonably priced” spring onions there—unaware that the market was heavily subsidized. This incident sparked online outrage and mockery, with one opposition leader quipping, “The president is going to be brought down by a spring onion.”
However, food affordability is just one among several reasons behind President Yoon’s conservative party’s failure in South Korea’s parliamentary elections—the crucial test of his first two years in office. Unpopular since his election by the narrowest margin ever recorded in South Korean history (0.7%), President Yoon has consistently maintained an approval rating ranging between 30% and 40%. Last month, nearly half of those surveyed perceived his performance as “very bad.”
“There are many incidents that have chipped away at his standing… First is a series of diplomatic gaffes… These incidents embarrassed Koreans who felt Mr Yoon had tarnished their reputation overseas.”
