The Crisis in Gaza: Addressing Famine and Humanitarian Needs

The recent warning by the Biden administration’s Gaza humanitarian envoy, David Satterfield, about the imminent risk of famine for the majority of Gaza’s population has raised concerns internationally. Satterfield emphasized that this is not up for debate; it is an established fact supported by experts and assessments from the international community.

However, Israel has pushed back against the UN-backed food security classification that warned of an impending famine in northern Gaza. Israeli authorities argue that there is more food and water in the territory than humanitarian workers claim. They assert that their efforts to facilitate aid entry into Gaza have been hampered by inadequate distribution on the part of international organizations.

Gaza faces a complex crisis as Israel is viewed as the effective controlling power in the region. According to Satterfield, under international humanitarian law, Israel bears the responsibility to ensure care for civilians living in Gaza.
