Israel is contemplating a new approach to end the conflict in Gaza by considering a hostage deal, even without completely eliminating Hamas, according to officials.

The proposed cease-fire plan aims to secure the release of over 130 hostages held in Gaza in exchange for discussions on achieving sustainable peace in the region, as reported by Axios.

This marks a significant shift in Israel's strategy, as it is the first time during the prolonged conflict that Israel is open to resolving the situation through a hostage deal without insisting on the complete eradication of the Palestinian terror group, as previously demanded by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Israeli negotiators suggest they are open to ending the war in Gaza in their latest cease-fire proposal. AP

As per the new proposal crafted with Egyptian mediators, the initial phase would involve the release of 20 hostages in exchange for approximately 500 Palestinian prisoners over a three-week truce, as reported by the Wall Street Journal.

The priority in the exchange would be on releasing female, sick, and elderly hostages, with the number reduced to 20 due to Hamas' claim of not having 40 hostages meeting the specified criteria.

Following the exchange, a 10-week cease-fire period would allow for continued negotiations between the two parties.

Additionally, the proposal includes provisions for displaced Palestinians to return to their homes in northern Gaza, many of which have been severely affected by the conflict.

Hamas, which has made the IDF's withdrawal from Gaza a central issue in the negotiations, is expected to provide its response to the mediators in Cairo soon.
