Controversy and Outrage: Iran’s Execution of Rapper Ignites Protests and Challenges US Criticism
Iran’s Regime Faces Backlash Over Death Sentence of Rapper Toomaj Salehi
On Monday, April 29, 2024, an Iranian court’s decision to impose the death penalty on Toomaj Salehi, a well-known Iranian rapper and critic of the regime, sparked global outrage and tarnished Iran’s attempts to capitalize on crackdowns on unrest in US university campuses as a violation of human rights.
Support for Salehi poured in from crowds in the US, Europe, and Canada, while political prisoners in Iran’s Ghezel Hesar prison denounced the death sentence as a severe human rights violation. Major US rappers and human rights organizations also rallied behind Salehi.
Iranian media closely monitored the campus turmoil in the US and France, highlighting the detention of 900 American students in April. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s social media account pointed to anti-US and anti-Israel protests in Western countries, underscoring the tarnished reputation of the US and Israel.
Reputational Damage to Iran’s Regime
Even reformist Iranian newspapers acknowledged that the regime’s international image suffered due to the unexpected death sentence imposed on Salehi, a singer known for his defiance against the regime without resorting to violence.
Since rising to fame, Salehi has been recognized for his courage and commitment to the Iranian Women, Life, Freedom movement.
Salehi was arrested in October 2022 for expressing support for nationwide protests following the death of Mahsa Amini, a Kurdish Iranian woman, in police custody over an alleged dress code violation.
After reports of his mistreatment in jail, Salehi received a six-year and three-month prison sentence in July 2023. Despite being released on bail by the supreme court due to a sentencing error, he was rearre

The text states that if they leave the tent camp by 2:00 p.m. (8:00 p.m. CET) and sign a pledge to abide by the school’s rules until June next year or until graduation, whichever is earlier, they will be able to properly complete the academic year. Otherwise, they will be suspended until the investigation is complete. A university spokesman confirmed the letter had been sent to students, but declined to provide details, according to the AP.
