Recent weeks have seen a surge in demonstrations in solidarity with Palestinians facing Israeli siege in Gaza, spreading across university campuses in the United States and worldwide.
Since April 18, more than 2,000 individuals have been arrested at US campuses, sparking debates on the right to protest, free speech limits, and accusations of antisemitism.
While attention has been drawn to clashes at New York’s Columbia University, Portland State, and UCLA, similar demonstrations and sit-ins are taking place in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.
Protesters at various universities are demanding divestment from companies supporting Israel and the war in Gaza, with the majority of demonstrations echoing this call.
The conflict, which began on October 7, has resulted in over 34,600 casualties in Gaza, with half of the population facing starvation, according to the Gaza health ministry.
Concerns are rising over an impending Israeli military operation in southern Gaza, prompting renewed calls for a ceasefire.
Pro-Palestinian Campus Protests Worldwide
Pro-Palestinian protest camps have emerged in at least seven universities across Australia in recent weeks.
The University of Queensland in Brisbane has become a focal point for rival camps, with supporters of Students for Palestine UQ and a smaller cluster with the Israeli flag among others.
This global support for Palestinians on university campuses reflects a growing concern for the situation in Gaza and calls for action to address the humanitarian crisis.
