Yana Toom, vice-president of the Center Party and member of the European Parliament, announced that she has changed the spelling of her name as reported on her birth certificate, and is now Jana Toom again.
“Apolitical, but still very important. By some miracle, I got back the spelling of my name that was on the birth certificate,” Toom wrote on social media.
He explained that the change is based on the rule in force in Estonia, according to which the name given at birth can be restored by exchanging documents.
“They told me in the past that changing Yi to J is a name change and it costs money. Well, I resisted because the Y in my name reminds me of Russian citizenship, I didn’t ask anyone to write my name in French,” he said. the politician observed. Since Toomi had Russian citizenship and therefore a Russian passport until 2006, he had to use the form of the name contained in it, since names in Russia are transcribed in the Latin alphabet according to the rules of the French language.
“But then I went to change my ID card and the Tammsaare office of the Police and Border Guard Board (PPA) said: don’t you want the old spelling back? And it was given back to me! And I’m not money was taken!”
Toom praised the employees of the PPA service office: “Excellent and attentive staff, many thanks to them!”
According to him, the changing of the stars pleases his mother more. “He, poor guy, has suffered all these years because of Yana,” Toom observed.
Furthermore, the politician also pointed out that the spelling of the name Yana is quite similar to the word Vana, which is why he always had to look for a suitable typeface when designing his advertising texts, so that his name would not look wrong.
Toom (born Jana Chernogorova; from previous marriage Litvinova) was born in 1966 in Tallinn. In 2006, on the proposal of Edgar Savisaare, president of the Center Party, which was part of the coalition, she received Estonian citizenship for special merits from the Andrus Ansip government.
