100 sporting moments | Wrestler Heiki Nabi | Various

This year, on December 8, it will be 100 years since the Olympic movement in Estonia. On this occasion, the sports editor of the Estonian National Broadcasting Company selected the one hundred most important sports events and stories of the Estonian sports century. The protagonist of this story is the wrestler Heiki Nabi, a wrestler from Hiiumaa, two-time world champion and Olympic silver medalist.

When Heiki Nabi won his first gold medal at the World Championships in China in 2006, it was a surprise to everyone. It is possible that at that time only his first coach Tiit Madalvee and Nab’s subsequent long-time supervisor Henn Põlluste really believed in such a high flight.

Better and worse years followed, but every time Nabi entered the title race, there was something to aspire to. Nabi usually did not disappoint: there were medals, including gold ones. On 6 August 2012, Estonia’s Olympic wrestling medal streak continued in London.

As incredible as Nabi’s first world title was his positive doping test 15 years later. A determined fighter, both on his rights and on the wrestling mat, Nabi served his punishment and returned to title contention.

Life is often made up of little things. That’s how it is in wrestling. Often both victories and defeats come nibin-nabin, as was said of Heiki Nab.
