A huge monument honoring the pop star has opened in Shakira’s hometown of Colombia, with fans comparing the statue to the Statue of Liberty in the US

In the center of Barranquilla there is a six and a half meter high bronze monument depicting Shakira. Under the statue, Shakira is thanked for “her talent, her voice that moves the masses and her hips that never lie.” The monument was created by sculptor Yino Márquez together with his students, the BBC reports.

On her Instagram account, Shakira shared photos of her parents standing in front of the new monument, as well as a video of the statue, in which she said it was a great tribute to the women of Colombia and Barranquilla.

“He really looks like you. Your parents must be very proud,” said one of the fans. “You are not only an incredibly talented artist, but also a beautiful person who has not forgotten his people and continues to do a lot for them,” praised a other.

However, some fans have compared the new Shakira monument to the American Statue of Liberty.

“The Statue of Liberty falls into the Atlantic Ocean after seeing Shakira’s statue,” commented a fan on X (formerly Twitter), referring to the United States.

“Shakira, here is your Statue of Liberty. You deserve it all, we love you Shak,” another fan tweeted.

2023 was a very successful year musically for Shakira: At the beginning of the year, the singer released a song with music producer BZRP that broke YouTube records in Latin America. The song told the story of her broken relationship with football star Gerard Pique, which came to light last year in dramatic fashion after the footballer cheated on her. Shakira also received three Latin American Grammys this year — the singer now has 14 total.
