Is it true that you also sang on the operating table?
That’s how it went. It was 2016 when I had a higher risk of stroke and one of my carotid arteries needed cleaning. I was operated on by Dr. Veronika Palmiste. I was lying in front of him on the operating table, with my hands tied. So I sang and yodeled to him: “It’s not easy for us! Jolailii, jolailaa!” I have been lucky with doctors in my life, I am already 73 years old and thanks to them I am very fat.
It is said that doctors are divided into three. There are good doctors and excellent doctors and the best doctors who recommend a little cognac a day to revive the circulation. But for the latter it is very difficult to get a number. By now I know you still have to take care of yourself. Luckily I only have to take blood pressure medication and I understand there is no way out. I would like to tell all men to trust doctors.
How are you surviving this cold, dark time?
How cold and dark? Estonian winter is beautiful. I only remember the cold and darkness of Soviet times, when Apelsin and I visited Soviet Russia and waited for hours in small, dark, unheated airports for our zaderzhka (in translation, forced break). After this experience, no winter is worse for me. In contrast, this present time is beautiful and white. For me, bad weather doesn’t exist in Estonia. There have been all sorts of things, but I wouldn’t want to travel anymore… In Apelsin’s time there were 70 concerts in a month, that’s too many. And then seeing your tools fall off the plane… Luckily, my current load is just the right size.
