A popular online store in Estonia will not give up plastic bags

Zalando has argued, in a dispute that has lasted more than a year, that it cannot manage its logistics without plastic bags. The online store notes that replacing plastic bags with cardboard or paper alternatives does not reduce the impact of packaging.

Zalando sells many brands and it is not possible for the company to adapt its internal processes to each brand, a Zalando spokesperson told Bloomberg. An Inditex spokesperson said the company was working internally and with partners to achieve its goal of eliminating single-use plastic for customers by the end of this financial year. Inditex is one of Zalando’s major partners.

Four years ago, Inditex pledged to ban all single-use plastic from customers by 2023. This includes removing plastic hangers, stickers and perfume packaging, as well as clear plastic packaging or plastic bags used to protect items. orders.

Retailers around the world use polymer bags to protect garments from moisture and stains as they travel along the supply chain from factory to store or customer’s home. According to industry group Fashion For Good, the fashion industry produces around 180 billion single-use plastic bags for clothing packaging every year. While most of them are technically recyclable, most end up in landfills or are incinerated.

Inditex, like many other clothing retailers, removes standard plastic bags at the factory in stores and warehouses where clothes are repackaged in other materials before being shipped to customers. An Inditex spokesperson said the plastic bags will later be collected and made available for recycling and reuse.

However, many retailers continue to use plastic bags because they believe that damaged clothing would have a greater environmental impact than a thin plastic bag. Zalando said it is testing several options to solve the long-term, industry-wide problem, such as folding clothes differently and reducing the thickness of plastic bags. The company added that their approach focuses on developing solutions that prioritize minimizing the impact of materials and waste.
