A transgender swimmer sues the international federation | I swim

Transgender athlete Lia Thomas, who made swimming history in the United States, does not agree with the restrictions of the International Swimming Federation and sued the federation’s sports court.

In 2022, Thomas, who was born male, competed in the women’s division at the United States College Swimming Championships and was also crowned champion. Subsequently, the International Swimming Federation (World Aquatics) decided that male athletes who have gone through puberty cannot compete among women.

Previously, transgender women could participate in competitions if they lowered their testosterone levels to the desired level. However, the scientific committee of the swimming association found that even after artificially lowering testosterone, transgender women have a significant advantage.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) announced that Thomas has brought a case against them. “Miss Thomas agrees that fair competition is an appropriate goal in sport and that regulating the participation of transgender women in swimming is appropriate,” the CAS noted.

“However, Ms. Thomas contends that the contested provisions are invalid and illegal because they discriminate against her.”

According to the sports court, the proceedings began as early as September and were initially subject to strict confidentiality rules, but now the parties have agreed that general information about the case will be made public.

In addition to swimming, transgender athletes have also been banned from competing in women’s competitions, such as cycling and track and field, in recent years.
