ANDREAS KAJU ⟩ Trump’s conception of cooperation is different

There is probably not a single person on this side of the Atlantic who has any illusions about Donald Trump’s views. There is no reason for this: he has never made a secret of it and since the second half of the 1980s he has spoken of his aversion both to permanent alliances and to international cooperation and free trade. He doesn’t seem to believe in the common good either win-win- strategies, neither in international relations nor in business, and is similar to our most unsavory leaders with their zero-sum game approaches.

On the other hand, you need to keep your mind calm. Trump’s basic attitudes are evident, but as we saw during his first term, that may not mean anything yet. Both Ukraine, the Baltic states and European security received more political and material attention during his administration than during that of Barack Obama. Maybe regardless of him, but it is impossible to ignore this fact. Most American society and politicians still value both international cooperation and America’s positive contribution in making the world more of a place where it is easier for America to realize its interests.
