ANDRES KAARMANN ⟩ Can an intelligent nation afford to use education funds senselessly?

The leaders of the education workers union have firmly announced that until the government finds ten million euros more, they will continue the strike indefinitely. It is true that the focus of the strike has broadened considerably in just a few days. Some took to the streets for a small pay rise and some for a heavy workload. But the biggest annoyance is probably politicians’ unrealistic promises.

However, I cannot agree with those who argue that we do not value good education. In contrast, Estonian public sector spending on education represents 6.2% of gross domestic product. If, for example, we are in the bottom half of the comparison of developed countries in terms of share of social and health spending, we continue to be at the top overall when it comes to spending on education. Perhaps the question arises: how will we wisely spend the education money available to Estonia?
