Singer and songwriter Anett Tamm has released her debut single under the stage name Alonette. According to Tamme, who is active in several projects, Alonette offers him the outlet she has long been looking for. At the same time, she is already preparing the next releases, because she gets bored very quickly.
Tamm, who has participated as an artist in several ensembles, including Tamtam Duo and the group Alfa Collective, has created another new outlet for himself, operating under the name Alonette. In addition to the above, Tamm also participates in the band The Nonconceptual Art Club, but more as a soloist.
The reason for the search for a new outlet was given by a side of Tamme that until now she has not been able to express. “I’ve been thinking about doing one for a long time independent OR independent– pop disco. I’ve been listening to this type of music for years and years and am passionate about it, but there wasn’t the right outlet to do it with an education. Then school ended and important milestones were achieved such as releasing albums with other bands. Then I felt that now I have this moment and I will try. The song came and the name came, and now I’m very excited about what this journey will be like,” Tamm told Vikerradio’s Maian Kärmase.
While everything can be interpreted by the new song, according to Tamme, the new single “Twist of Fate” is mostly about the confusion that can arise in a close relationship due to communication barriers and what happens when you start to argue about it. “So who is mad and who is calm,” Tamm explained. The new single features Erki Pärnoja on guitar, Raun Juurikas on keyboards, Martti Tärn on bass and Martin Petermann on drums. According to Tamme, choosing bandmates was very simple. “I arranged the song somehow in my audio recording program and immediately thought, I know who will immediately understand what I want,” Tamm said. Juurika, Tärni and Petermann recorded the backing track in half an hour, then Tamm asked Erk Pärnoja to also play the guitars. “I don’t think any trial has gone that easily for me,” Tamm admitted.
Tamm hopes to understand why the process was so much easier this time than before. “At the moment, I feel that ‘Twist of Fate’ is by nature a simpler song than the ones I wrote for Alfa Collective or that Karl Tammaru and I wrote together for TamTam. There was a lot more to figure out. These I The processes weren’t unpleasant, but Alonette’s first step came so easily and smoothly that there was always joy,” Tamm said.
“When I got the skeletal “Twist of Fate” on the piano in about two hours, I recorded the demo on my phone and as I listened I thought, help, I didn’t know I had these Elton John influences so close to the surface,” laughed Tamm and added that he’s been listening to Elton John’s music his whole life. In addition to John, Tamm also mentions Joni Mitchell, Steely Dan and The Carpenters as influences on him. Tamm isn’t afraid to point to examples that have influenced his sound. “There aren’t actually more and more of these artists. In the end, the listener also gets an idea where I got inspiration from. Everyone hears something from there. It’s nice. In the end, all musicians make music because they are been inspired by someone,” Oak said.
Tamm is a huge music fan and, according to him, feels a new attraction to an artist almost every month. “It does not matter if independent-artist, old school pop music artist or some very modern improvisational artist. Tamm hopes to stay playful as a creator and utilize different outlets. “Alonette’s project gives me the opportunity to go towards simplicity, while for example I have a new project with guitarist Anna Regina Kalki. We write a completely different kind of modern jazz with a lot of free improvisation. I feel like I have to do both. things. Be versatile. I get bored very quickly. Maybe that’s why you need to always have different things,” said Tamm, who, in his opinion, has accepted that he doesn’t need to reach the masses with a project. “Then it turns out the same even if you do a lot,” Tamm laughed.
Although there were dead points in Tamme’s creative journey, looking back, they didn’t last very long. “I still find some new artist or genre to get excited about and immerse myself in. It seems like an endless discovery, but I can’t predict if there will be a saturation moment. I hope that if it happens, it won’t happen” “It won’t last too long, otherwise I have trust in myself that I will be able to come up with something. To that end, I hope that my tendency to do different things and take on the role of improviser has trained me and taught me to adapt,” Tamm hopes.
