Archive pearls: memory of the composer Ülo Vinter on the occasion of his 100th birthday | Music

Wednesday 3 January will mark 100 years since the birth of composer Ülo Vinter. On this occasion, we searched for memorable moments with the beloved composer from the ERR’s boundless archive.

Born in Tallinn in 1924, Ülo Vinter graduated in music theory at the Tallinn School of Music in 1951 and in composition in 1956 at the Tallinn Conservatory as a student of Villem Kapi. In the years 1956–1969 he was music editor of the Estonian Radio and in the years 1969–1986 music editor of the Estonian Telefilm.

Among other things, Vinter wrote music for the films “Men Don’t Cry”, “Young Pensioner”, “Here We Are!” and “Spring in the heart”. He also composed the music for the television productions “Väike nõid” and “Kessu” and the choir song “Laul Põhjamaast” from the musical “Pipi Pikksukk”.

Ülo Vinter died in 2000.

“Spring, or the school photos” (1984)
The children’s choir “Ellerhein” performs songs from Ülo Vinter’s cantata “Spring or images of the school years”. Andres Ots reads the intertexts of “Spring” by Oskar Luts.

The legendary musical by Ülo Vinter and Ülo Raudmäe based on the play by Astrid Lindgren. The story was directed by Sulev Nõmmik, artist Kustav-Agu Püüman.
