Azerbaijan wants to host the next COP29 climate talks

Negotiations over the organization of the upcoming COP29 climate talks have stalled as Russia has announced it will veto any bid by any European Union country to host the talks.

Azerbaijan has sought to strengthen its chances as a host candidate country. The country signed an agreement with Armenia allowing Baku to apply to host the talks without Armenia’s veto.

Armenia agreed to support Azerbaijan in exchange for joining the Eastern European Group’s COP office.

A candidate to host the COP needs the support of all countries in the UN Eastern European Regional Group. According to Aykhan Hajizada, spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, they received support from most countries belonging to the Eastern European group, including Russia.

Moldova also offered to host, and Serbia took it into consideration.

The deal is still being negotiated at the COP28 climate talks in Dubai, with a bid to reach an agreement before the talks are due to end on 12 December.
