Marc-André ter Stegen, the goalkeeper of Barcelona and the German national football team, has to go to the operating table and stay away for several weeks.
“After an in-depth consultation with the club’s medical service and several experts, we have decided in favor of surgery,” ter Stegen, who injured his lower back during national team training, announced to the media.
“The break obviously bothers me, but it is the right and safe decision to be in the best condition both for the matches of my club, Barcelona, and for those of the national team.”
Neither Barcelona nor ter Stegen have mentioned when the German might return, but according to local media the break will last several weeks and the goalkeeper may not return for the first Champions League matches in February.
31-year-old ter Stegen has made 17 appearances for the Catalan club this season, keeping eight clean sheets. Last year he won the Zamora trophy as the best goalkeeper in the Spanish Premier League.
