33-time German champions Bayern Munich moved three steps closer to Bayer Leverkusen after beating 17th-placed Berlin Union at home.
The first three quarters of an hour belonged entirely to Bayern, with 15 shots from the hosts, of which 6 went on target. The visitors’ expected goals, or xG, after 45 minutes was 0.05 versus 1.26 for the Munich club, but despite everything, the first half ended in a 0-0 draw.
The second half lasted just 30 seconds and Bayern did what they had failed to do in the first 45 minutes. Harry Kane, who received Raphael Guerreiro’s pass in the penalty area, moved away from the opponent’s defender and shot the ball to the post, the ricocheted ball shot to Guerreiro himself, who delivered it into the net- 1:0.
Even though Union desperately needed an equaliser, they ultimately missed it. Bayern, who had half chances, were limited to just one goal, enough for their 14th victory of the season.
Now league leaders Bayer Leverkusen and trailing Bayern have 18 games under their belt, but Xabi Alonso’s team has 48 points and Thomas Tuchel’s men have 44. Both clubs will take to the field on January 27, when Bayer host Borussia Mönchengladbach and Bayern will travel to Augsburg.
