The new documentary film by Aljona Suržikova by the artist Kaarel Kurismaa Arte has arrived in cinemas

The protagonist of Aljona Suržikova’s film is one of our best-known masters of kinetic art, whose work has aroused admiration and controversy.

“Kaar has a unique personality, he is such a talented artist, he has done so many different things that it was very interesting for me to study how it is possible to make stained glass, cartoons, monumental art, drawing and painting,” said director Aljona Suržikova . “For me it was important to show different sides of him. Him as a multi-faceted artist, him as a creator in very different fields and how you can put all of that in one person.”

Both the artist himself and his companions, friends and gallery owners can speak in the film. The stories are told directly in front of the camera, the interviews are supplemented with a lot of archive material.

Film journalist Tristan Priimägi says that on the one hand the portrait film is a good way to exhibit and document the artist and his work.

“Taking into account what also emerges from the film, that is, that Kurismaa’s art has been on the verge of being forgotten several times, and in the very complex format in which it develops, these works often fall apart, disappear from urban space, are torn Having said that, the goal of preserving this heritage is definitely present in this film,” said film journalist Tristan Priimägi.

At the same time, Priimägi says he would expect portrait films to also have a greater authorial position beyond documentation.

“I would like to encourage all portrait documentary makers to not only chronicle, but also make artistic films,” Priimägi said. “Maybe we have different needs or expectations about portrait books, so that the portrait book itself is a lasting document, not just as a chronicle, but also as something else.”

The film “The Limits of Timelessness by Kaarel Kurismaa” can be seen in the Sõprus and Artis cinemas in Tallinn, as well as in several smaller cinemas throughout Estonia.
