Boeing urges airlines to inspect 737 Max planes for possible loose bolts

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said on Thursday that the complaint was filed after the manufacturer discovered that two of the planes were missing bolts in the rudder control system, raising concerns about possible defects in all the planes.

“The issue identified with the specific aircraft has been resolved,” Boeing said in a statement to CNN. “As a precaution, we encourage operators to inspect their 737 Max aircraft and inform us of any findings.”

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration said the inspection request includes a two-hour investigation of safety-critical parts on each of the approximately 1,300 737 Max jets in service.

The 737 Max model has come under intense scrutiny after several incidents of autopilot errors, including a crash that killed nearly 350 people.

An FAA report released in April said the company ignored engineers’ warnings to ground the 737 Max after two fatal crashes in late 2018. The plane was able to fly again nearly two years later.

The company has struggled financially since the Covid pandemic, losing $1.6 billion in the third quarter of this year, due to falling demand for new planes and a costly contract to build the next Air Force One.
