This green light gives impetus to a project that has accumulated twelve years of delay. The Nuclear Safety Authority (ASN) “has just adopted the authorization to put the Flamanville EPR into service”, the deputy director general of the French Nuclear Authority, Julien Collet, told AFP on Tuesday 7 May. Issued at the end of his instructions, “this authorization will allow EDF to begin loading fuel into the reactor core and therefore begin the testing phase which will continue” in the coming months, he added, echoing thisa press release from ASN.
These tests will specifically allow us to do so “verify the correct behavior of the reactor core” et “the correct functioning of the reactor safety devices”according to Julien Collet.
A fundamental step towards the production of electricity in the coming months
The future commissioning of the new generation EPR reactor in Flamanville constitutes a fundamental step for the gradual launch of electricity production, scheduled for the summer. EDF can now start loading at any time, “one by one”uranium assemblies in the reactor, an essential step before the progressive launch.
Connection to the electricity grid, called The “coupling”, however, will only take place in a few months, once the reactor has reached 25% of its power, after a gradual increase in the phases, which will require new opinions from the ASN. It’s just in “end of the year” that the reactor should operate and deliver its electrons at 100% of its power, according to EDF.

The Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) published Supreme Decree 011-2024-EF that modifies the Regulation of Law No. 29230, Law that promotes regional and local public investment with participation of the private sector, known as the Law of Works for Taxes (OxI).
