Chinese leader Xi spoke of the “reunification” of Taiwan in his end-of-year speech

“The reunification of the motherland is a historical inevitability,” Xi said. “All Chinese people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait should be united by a shared goal and the glory of reuniting the Chinese people.”

According to Reuters, Xi’s statement was stronger than last year, when he compared the people of Taiwan and its subjects to members of a single family and spoke of cooperation to promote “the common and lasting prosperity of the Chinese people.” . Last week, while celebrating former Chinese leader Mao Zedong’s birthday, Xi also said that the occupation of Taiwan was an inevitable outcome of history.

Presidential elections will be held in Taiwan on January 13, where the pro-independence Lai Ching-te will compete, while Hou Yu-ih and Ko Wen-je will support a more conciliatory line towards China. Democratic Progressive Party candidate Lai and Kuomintang candidate Hou are likely to go to the second round.
