Christmas Reminder: Check out these tips for a safe holiday

The Union of Estonian Apartment Associations reminds residents before the holidays to take into account their fellow citizens: this way the holidays will pass safely and pleasantly for everyone. “In an apartment building where residents take care of each other, everyone has fewer worries and it is more pleasant to live,” emphasizes Urmas Mardi, member of the board of the Association of Estonian Apartment Associations, head of the legal department.

While you may love the jingling and flashing Christmas decorations on your balcony, your neighbors may disagree. “The apartment association can also mutually agree on decorations: for example, the houses that stood out in the apartment association competition for their beautiful home environment have also found a common language when it comes to decorating the house in winter”, recognizes Urmas Mardi.

Hot stoves and ovens, all sorts of other household appliances and technical gadgets – unfortunately, the fires that have destroyed so many homes started from a refrigerator cord or phone charger left plugged in. “You need to check that the home’s electrical system is in order and not overloaded,” underlines the head of the legal department of the Union of Condominium Associations.

Only heat the oven and fireplace according to fire safety regulations and be careful with candles: make sure they are lit safely. “Under no circumstances should you fall asleep or leave the house with a lit candle,” warns Mardi.

Loud parties are not allowed in an apartment building, so don’t terrorize your neighbors with loud music or noise. “Take other residents into account even on weekdays: park your car so that others can drive and walk too, don’t leave unnecessary things in the stairwell and close windows and doors tightly,” suggests Mardi.

If you plan to leave and spend your holidays in a country house, you do not need to turn off the heating in the city apartment: the minimum temperature in the apartment should be +18 degrees. “In an unheated apartment, water pipes can burst in the cold and this can cause serious damage to the house,” Marti advises apartment owners.

Although each of us wishes to spend the holidays peacefully, unexpected situations can still arise. “As an apartment owner, make sure the apartment association can reach you quickly in an emergency – leave your business contacts with the association board or administrator,” advises Mardi. It is also important that the apartment number is visible if you need help from rescuers or an ambulance in a dangerous situation.

The balcony of an apartment building or a small courtyard is definitely not the right place to set off fireworks! “Unfortunately, more or less every year, cases occur when attempts are made to launch pyrotechnic objects on the New Year, setting fire to the balcony of a residential building with a poorly directed rocket or even seriously injuring someone. Even garbage cans catch fire at due to carelessly thrown pyrotechnics,” warns Mardi. Fireworks should not be used in places where they could create a dangerous situation – a safe radius would be 30 meters and before using fireworks you should ensure that they are completely safe
