Classical radio series “Fantasia” 25: Music is chosen by Sander Saarmets | Music

For 25 years, the nightly companion of classical radio listeners and the “Fantasia” program series which explores the most extreme boundaries of music has been on the air. On the occasion of the important anniversary, a spectacular marathon will be broadcast on December 18th at 7.01 pm in which various hosts and friends of “Fantasia” will choose imaginative and limitless music live. Sander Saarmets chooses music for the birthday of “Fantasia” on Klassikararadio on Monday 18 December at 11pm.

Sander Saarmets is a composer and electronic musician interested in sounds both in music and in its external context and who sincerely believes that music has no boundaries.

“Fantasy” is the best collection, soundtrack, which is updated over time. A great way to share with listeners what seems important right now.

  • How do you get the most special fantasy stories?

Special stories can come from anywhere, but the most meaningful ones come from real-life encounters with their authors.

  • If you could be any piece of music, what would it be?

I’d rather be a big modular synthesizer.

  • A musical discovery or experience that for some reason is important to you and without which you wouldn’t be who you are today?

The first serious musical earthquake occurred on a Wednesday when I listened to Ligeti’s “Atmosfere” in my music history class. I got several steps closer to music. Another experience comes from high school, when I listened to Ryuichi Sakamoto’s album “Discord” on the roof of city hall before class. The third life-changing event was meeting a Buchla synthesizer in Stockholm.

  • You and the radio. First or most vivid memory of radio?

When I was little, I sometimes spent the night at my grandmother’s. The radio always played in the background as she fell asleep, wonderfully quiet. It was like proto-fantasy: the music was low enough that I didn’t understand what the songs were about at the time and it made the imagination work at full speed.

  • The most inspiring time and place on planet Earth right now?

It seems to me that the most inspiring place might have nothing to do with geography. What matters, rather, is the interpersonal spark capable of triggering a chain of events, culminating in the emergence of something completely new.
